Project Threadways Symposium 2025
The Project Threadways Symposium brings together scholars, activists, makers, and thinkers to present research, share stories, and encourage dialogue about history, community, and power—all through the lens of fashion and textiles. Presentations, dinners, exhibitions, and workshops create a multi-day experience in Florence, Alabama, centered on material culture and making. Virtual registration is also available. In 2025, our theme is Food, Clothing, and Shelter. Presentations will explore the intersection of art and necessity, connect climate and culture, and share stories of artists, designers, and craftspeople who shape our everyday lives.
Southern Cultures
The Winter 2024 issue of Southern Cultures, titled "The Future of Textiles," is a special issue that explores the complex history, evolving present, and hopeful path forward for fashion and fiber. Edited by Marcie Cohen Ferris and guest edited by Natalie Chanin with Olivia Ware Terenzio from Project Threadways, the essays, works, photos, and poetry center on the intersections of craft, community, and sustainability. Highlighting makers, historians, scholars, and advocates reimagining a better future for textiles, the contributors explore how fibers shape economies, sustain cultures, and carry traditions across generations—asking critical questions about where we go from here.
